Smart Panel | UX App Design
Overview
QualSights is a market research company based in Chicago combining qualitative and quantitative research to help clients better understand product usage. Their aim was to optimize user experience for participants in one of their studies called Smart Panel. The client wanted to improve current user flow and provide users with greater clarity on their involvement in this specific study. There was also interest in an entire app redesign, including a more branded feel and a new dashboard to quickly access pages relevant to the study. To address key user pain points and align with the client’s broader goal of optimized user engagement, I delivered a series of targeted design solutions focused on clarity, efficiency, and transparency.

Devices
Firstly, to avoid letting any devices go offline, I added a new filter at the top to prioritize quickly finding devices by battery status. By increasing drop downs and creating defined frame and text styles, there becomes a more digestible visual hierarchy. Also with the aim of minimizing clutter and creating visual harmony, Pair a Product and Add New Device are combined under one call to action.

Activities
Immediate visual breakdown of completed activities via an interactive activity-tracking graph and activity history section. Completed activities are broken down with timestamps and USD earned, as a means to incentivize and provide clarity. Upcoming activities are also highlighted here for quick access, avoiding errors with missed activities.

Outcomes
At the forefront, overall on-brand and consistent design paired with a friendly, defined tone provide the starting point for increasing user trust — in the company as well as the study. In providing an improved device set-up process, users are able to put less effort into starting and maintaining participation. In easing this process, both initial and lasting trust is again improved and more consistent usage is gained. With a more comprehensive Activities page, the user gains a feeling of autonomy, avoids missing important activities, and understands opportunities for additional income—all aimed at improving usage, demystifying the study and payment process, and building user trust.
